Patriotic Rice Krispies Treats (Print)

Festive, chewy layers of red, white, and blue Rice Krispies blend colorful flavors.

# What You Need:

→ Main

01 - 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
02 - 1 (10 oz) bag mini marshmallows
03 - 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
04 - 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

→ Coloring

05 - Red gel food coloring
06 - Blue gel food coloring

→ Decoration

07 - Red, white, and blue sprinkles (optional)

# Steps:

01 - Line a 9x9-inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease it.
02 - Divide the marshmallows and butter into three equal portions, approximately 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and 1 tablespoon butter for each color layer.
03 - In a large saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Stir in a few drops of red gel food coloring until desired shade is reached. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until evenly coated. Press evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
04 - Wipe the saucepan clean, then melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in vanilla extract. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until coated. Gently press over the red layer.
05 - Wipe the saucepan clean, then melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add remaining marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in a few drops of blue gel food coloring. Add remaining 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until coated. Gently press over the white layer.
06 - If desired, sprinkle the top with red, white, and blue sprinkles while the mixture is still slightly warm.
07 - Allow treats to cool and set for at least 1 hour. Lift from the pan using parchment paper, slice into 16 squares, and serve.

# Top Tips:

01 -
  • Three simple layers that look impressively festive but taste like the nostalgic childhood treat everyone craves.
  • Ready in just 30 minutes of actual work—plus cooling time—making it perfect for last-minute patriotic entertaining.
  • The hands-on layering process is genuinely fun to do with kids or friends, turning cooking into the celebration itself.
02 -
  • Gel food coloring is non-negotiable here because liquid coloring adds moisture that will make your marshmallow mixture impossible to press into clean layers and the bars won't set properly.
  • Wiping your saucepan between each layer keeps colors distinct and prevents muddy mixing—it takes 10 extra seconds but makes the visual difference between amateur and polished.
  • Lightly greased hands or a spatula prevent the mixture from sticking and tearing as you press, so don't skip this step even though it feels fussy.
03 -
  • Use a bench scraper or dough cutter instead of a knife for cleaner, neater squares that don't compress or tear the layers.
  • Room-temperature Rice Krispies mix faster and more evenly with warm marshmallows than cold cereal straight from the box, so pour your cereal into a bowl five minutes before you need it.
