Waffle Grilled Cheese Twist (Print)

Golden, crispy waffle sandwiches layered with melted cheddar and butter for an irresistible crunch.

# What You Need:

→ Bread

01 - 4 slices sandwich bread (white, whole wheat, or sourdough)

→ Cheese

02 - 4 slices cheddar cheese (or any good melting cheese such as Gruyère, mozzarella, Swiss)

→ Butter

03 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

→ Optional Add-ins

04 - 2 slices tomato
05 - 2 slices cooked bacon
06 - 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

# Steps:

01 - Set your waffle maker to the recommended temperature and allow it to preheat fully according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
02 - Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter on one side of each bread slice.
03 - Place two buttered bread slices, butter side down, on a clean surface. Add two slices of cheese to each slice and include any optional add-ins if desired.
04 - Cover with the remaining bread slices, butter side up, to form two complete sandwiches.
05 - Place one sandwich inside the preheated waffle maker. Close the lid gently and press lightly. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes until the bread turns golden brown and crispy and the cheese melts thoroughly.
06 - Remove the cooked sandwich and repeat the process with the second sandwich.
07 - Allow the sandwiches to cool for 1 minute before slicing and serving while hot.

# Top Tips:

01 -
  • The waffle maker creates a textured crust that's crispier and more interesting than any stovetop version.
  • Takes less than 10 minutes from butter knife to plate, making it perfect for hungry moments.
  • You can stuff it with whatever's in your fridge, so it never gets boring.
02 -
  • Don't skip the preheat; a cold or lukewarm waffle maker will steam your bread instead of crisping it.
  • Cheese slices melt faster and more evenly than shredded cheese, which tends to squeeze out and make a mess on your waffle maker.
03 -
  • Sprinkle a tiny pinch of garlic powder or dried herbs onto the buttered bread for a flavor boost that feels intentional.
  • If your cheese is cold, let it sit out for a few minutes so it melts faster and more evenly once it hits the waffle maker's heat.
